Sauna Etiquette: How to Be a Considerate Guest
Share
The sauna is a sanctuary. Whether you're visiting alone, with a partner, or as part of a small group, there's an unspoken code that makes the experience better for everyone. Here's our guide to sauna etiquette rooted in Finnish tradition, adapted for the BAKE way of doing things.
Arrive Clean
Always shower before entering the sauna. This is both a hygiene courtesy to other guests and a practical one clean skin sweats more efficiently, so you'll get more from your session. Remove any jewellery, as metal heats up quickly and can become uncomfortable.
Bring a Towel (and Sit on It)
Always sit or lie on a towel in the sauna. This protects the wooden benches and is basic courtesy to the next person. A second towel for drying off between rounds is also handy.
Keep Noise Low
The sauna is a place of quiet. Soft conversation is fine, but loud music, phone calls, or boisterous behaviour disrupts the meditative quality of the experience. Think of it like a library but warmer, and with better benefits.
Ask Before Adding Water to the Stones
If you're sharing the sauna with others, always ask before ladling water onto the stones. The steam (löyly) intensifies the heat significantly, and not everyone may be ready for it. A simple "shall I add some water?" goes a long way.
Respect the Cool-Down Space
The area around the cold plunge and outdoor seating is part of the experience too. Keep it tidy, don't rush others, and give people space to decompress in their own time.
Phones Away
We gently encourage leaving your phone behind during your session. The sauna is one of the few places left where you can truly disconnect. Embrace it. The notifications will still be there when you're done — and you'll be better equipped to deal with them.
Hydrate and Rest Between Rounds
Drink water between rounds and take your time. There's no rush. The sauna rewards those who slow down and let the experience unfold at its own pace.
Leave It as You Found It
Tidy up after yourself, hang your towels, dispose of any rubbish, and leave the space as peaceful as you found it for the next guests.
Come and Experience It
Now that you know the etiquette, you're ready. Book your session at THE BAKE YARD | WIMBORNE and settle into the ritual. If you'd like to visit more than once (and most people do), our SAUNA BUNDLES make it easy to build a regular practice.
